Let me start to catch up- photos first

Ok, kids,

(oops I am not supposed to say that, apparently it is condescending sounding to some, but to me it sounds humorous and inclusive, so there is that!)

Oh poor poor Lola
I know I have not been on line much lately.  Well that is not true, I have been online, but not on the blog.  This blog is a place where I release some inner conversations and lately those discussions have been in closed session.  I will talk about some of it coming up in the next few days/weeks.

BUT I have been neglecting my photography a bit, for a variety of reasons, but I downloaded and edited last night after a good 5.6 mile walk.  I still have time on my hands as the MA is slaving away at work, but the end of that is near.  YAY.  As much as I like alone time, it gets old after a while when he doesn't get home until 9:30.

Momma to be SarahJane with the doggies making a snow fort
So I have a variety of pix from  long past snowy to more recent.  Pix of all sorts of things from baby showers to sunflowers and things in between.  It was FUN to do this last night, but again I am running out of room on my disc, so I have to figure out the whole external hard drive  thing ASAP.

Ella Bella and their posse
This first group, though, is more people sorts of things.

Next post is the landscapes and such.

Suddenly pancakes can not be unadorned. At least she like REAL syrup.
Full disclosure: Grandma gave her cake for the first time.  oops

After 3 months without my kiddos and grand girl fix, this has been so much fun to look through these pics and post them.  Oh and of course the D-O-Gs.

This seems to be a tad Ella heavy, but I didn't think anyone would complain.  AND pretty soon she will have a spotlight to share when we welcome our little Grandboy into the family!!  Little Greggy is coming within the next month and this is SO exciting and SOOO much fun.

Next up some outdoorsy pix....

Hope this is adding a little joy to your life.  :)  It sure has to mine!

Ready set APRIL!! plus go away snow- enough already

I have not been doing a lot of blogging lately, it seems as soon as one thing is done, I have another thing going on.  Which is pretty typical of life, isn't it?

Actually, I have not been walking as much in the last few months (stupid winter) and I realize that I compose a lot of posts while walking.  And I would have photos to show you from my walks, or at least my ability to walk freely about the property or area or whatevah.  So, there has been a bit of silence on the blog front.

So the play went well, both of my far-flung sons have visited and I am at the dawn of the day that wants to give northern WI another blast of winter and the day that will have me getting out before this happens.  I plan to hop in the car as soon as I possibly can today, and drive south before the snow up here begins.  Watching the weather I am pretty sure that I will be fine once I get over to the freeway.  The precip in central WI is supposed to be  mostly rain or slushy snow late this afternoon, so I can deal with that.  What I can't deal with is ice......  I think I am in the clear.

This weekend is baby shower weekend!  I am hitting the road because I want and need to be there for my kiddo and his wife!  AND I desperately, and I do mean that!, need a weekend out of town.  I noticed when I was packing that the last time I used my suitcase was in December for the TIES convention.....  :(

So, I am going to go and double check my packing job, make sure I didn't put my toothbrush away last night instead of returning it to my makeup bag, and just generally tidy up and prepare.  I feel sort of bad deserting the MA at a time when he is gone from home from 8 am until 9:30 or 10 at night, but it's only for a little while longer.  I left him lots of stuff to eat, tho.  Hopefully the elusive Mike will come over and hang out with the horse and the kitties a few times.

Everyone have yourself a good Thursday, stay safe if you are up here in the snowbelt, and even if you are not!  And don't forget to be a joy giver!

Mid March update

I have been at school-

that is about all.

The weather has been yucky (I don't want to complain about it, but I certainly could), I have been putting the finishing touches on the scenery for the play and now managing the back stage element and tonight we go on.

Unless you work in a school, you do not understand the odd dynamics of March.  The 3rd quarter has the fewest days off (this year there have been a couple), the grey and cold weather, the TOUGH parts of learning is upon us, and everyone gets twitchy and tired and cranky and to put it bluntly, students are known to do stupid things at the time of the year.  The little kids went for almost 3 weeks without being able to get outside for recess because of the below zero temps or wind chill- during the day!  Frequent acute viruses run rampant through the buildings, and many children and adults alike, seems to reach a point of feeling just a bit hopeless.  We are all sort of rallying the troops and circling the wagons (how many metaphors can I use without it being awkward here?? LOL) and just getting through the month.  It is hard to describe the atmosphere, but it is there and it is a time that has to be constantly monitored and extra emotional support needs to be given- daily, frequently and liberally.

Personally, while I took pictures of the wonderful visit by the first Oswald son and Sarah to visit since Christmas, I haven't had time to download yet.  I haven't been lucky enough to see any great sunsets.  I haven't even been able to get to the gym!!!  SOB.  So, yeah, it has been a time of getting by and getting through it and try to enjoy what is in front of you and not sit around and miss what we don't have..... like grass and warmth and birds and daffodils.  And there is that little demon known as tax season.

And so I am keeping my eye on the prize- more free time coming soon, the end of the third quarter in a week, another Oswald son and his Sarah coming soon (along with that little bonus that comes with them!), and a nice trip OUT OF TOWN that will be welcome!!  And I'm pretty sure that the MA will be home a lot more in just under a month, too.  I'm feeling the need for a driver for a photo shoot or two!!

Anyway, enough of that.  Tonight is the  first performance of our school musical and it is a SWEET little play.  Funny, fun, and lot so great dancing and really enjoyable music.  This cast of kids is so great, what a fun, sweet and kind group they are.  It is has been a pleasure to work backstage with them.  Time to don the black clothes and on with the show!

And that really does give me joy!

So, what are you waiting for?

So what are you waiting for?
Isn't it amazing how many variations of theme this statement could have?

It could be a challenge.  It could a question of object.  It could be a question of who.  It could be a question of action or inaction.  It could be rhetorical or it could be objective.

At this time of the year, MANY of us have a common want that we are waiting for, but there are so many possibilities.  Here are a few that spring to mind

Spring- well duh.  Spring holds so much promise after the bleak hopelessness waiting of winter.  We are waiting for the snow to melt, for the weather to get warmer, for our flipflops to be appropriate footwear choices....  we want to see the green grass- heck any sign of grass, no matter what the color- and buds on the trees.  We want to have flowers, and bugs (oy, do I have to include the mosquitos and deer flies?), and gravel in our driveways and the cacophony of birds' and animals' calls.  Spring is that proverbial time of birth and renewal and growing and spring break-- oh yeah, we all need spring break of some sort.  And we really need Lola to be free of her snow prison!!

People- I personally am waiting to see my people.  My kids, my grandchild, my mom and my siblings who I haven't seen in a long time.  We wait for the mailman, the UPS guy, or the snowplow driver.  We wait for people to get here and we are waiting sometimes for them to just leave.  I have lately thought about people I haven't seen in a while and then they show up in the grocery store! We wait for calls and messages and texts, we are surprised when we get so many and then are sad when we hear from no one and sometimes we are annoyed that people are bothering us and relieved when there is no communication at all.  Finding new people, retaining our best people in life and sometimes others move or slip out of sight- all part of our flow.

Birth- Some of you may know that I am waiting for my next grandchild- and that will be happening fairly soon.  This is the best kind of anticipation, fraught with hope, anxiety, joy, and wondering.  Some of the hardest waiting that needs to be done.  Birth of our babies, our pets, the animals of our world - even the plants and seed we nurture, are surely treasures that need some extra attention.

Death- unfortunately this is a cloud that looms...  our elderly parents and grandparents, our friends and neighbors of all ages, all the living things in our life are in "danger" of following this natural completion of life.  I will say that every morning I look out to see if Jac is still standing and every evening I search to see his head stretching over the paddock gate.  My Jacpot is an old boy and one day in the not too distant future his sweet hay scented breath will be gone.

Perfection- Perfection in life, weight, diet, exercise, money, housing, car, clothing and the list can go on and on, many people are looking for any of these at any given time.  A constant bombardment from outside and from within give us the idea that we are just waiting for a time when perfection will be ours.  Our GOAL WEIGHT is what we need to be at, but wait, maybe we can just lose 5 more and then we will actually be thin enough.  Our DIET is needing to be perfect everyday and if it is not, then we surely will die well before our time, or we will not be as healthy as we should be, or we may not have the energy to do the exercise that we MUST do perfectly.  Every day. I'm pretty sure it is written on our foreheads if this is not done properly and perfectly.   We need to have enough money to have that perfect house, car and clothing to show to the outside world that we can look just like those people on the internet or act just like the people on tv, or be just like the folks down the road who appear to have a marvelous, perfect life, who really don't at all.  If we wait for the lottery to be won, or our proverbial ship to come in, or that goal weight to be achieved or if we can just run a 10 k then we will be of that proper fitness level to live a perfect life, well then, that is just what needs to be done.

Of course, intellectually we all know that there is no perfect.  But those sorts of images and ideas are shoved into our faces daily.  Some people don't pay attention to that at all, and I wish I was one of them, indeed I am trying to be.  Some of us are visual people and there are others who zealously strive to do well in all aspects of our life (ahem, overachiever types pay attention) may have a hard time dealing with all that propaganda.  Those ideas that infiltrate your head when you are not looking, you pay too much attention material things that we may or may not need. Things that seem like really good idea at the time evolve into something that is more than a bit passé or not helpful anymore.  Goals are outdated, and need revising.  Sometimes you have to come up with your own plan, something that works for you and not for the rest of the world. There is no authority in this life that says things are right or wrong in how you choose to spend your time and live your life (no matter what someone on the internet says). Turns out there is NO ONE BEST WAY to do anything.  There is your way though, and that is your best way.

We have to learn to enjoy the wait, because it turns out that waiting is a metaphor for life, as I see it. Raise your hand if you couldn't wait to become old enough to stay up past 8, to get your drivers license, to be old enough to drink, to graduate, to get that job, to be married and have kids (or not).  We are always wishing our life away to the next thing.  That is something we all do, and yet it would be so nice to live more in the moment.  Really enjoy what you are doing now, even if it is not what you are "supposed" to be doing.  This is hard to do and is something I used to do more!  I used to just take a day and do what I wanted, now it seems I fill my time with supposed to dos.  I am supposed to be out walking, though it is stupidly cold out, when they promised me warm.  I should be upstairs finishing cleaning years of collected stuff, but wow does that get old.  I should be reading something, or cooking something or in some way accomplishing something that needs to be done.  Push through, just do it, go for your goals, yadda yadda yadda.  You  might not enjoy everything that you HAVE to do, but you should do things that you like.  Eat things that you like, and screw it if someone says you "shouldn't".  Be the person that you want to be, even if it isn't what someone else wants you to be.  In the end, you have to live with ...... YOU!

MAYBE we need to stop for a minute.  MAYBE we should be looking around and living our life as we have it right now.  Keep ourselves busy while we are waiting for the next thing- appreciating the things we have and the people we love and like, enjoying the body that you have right now, and the things that we can do at this time.  Talking to your favorite people, petting your favorite horse, cats and doggies, drawing the things you like, singing the songs you love, playing the games that make you shine.  And undoubtedly we need to begin enjoying this wait- because it seems that the journey is what it is all about.  You don't have to after all eat perfectly every day, or exercise the most awesome way that is possible, or have a perfect relationship with all the people around you or have the best and most of every material thing.  A very wise person reminded me that I am perfect just the way I am, because I am different and quirky and not perfect.  And so are all of you.  And we should find a whole lot of joy in that!

**I want you to know though this sounds somewhat mysterious or multi-meaning, there is no major tear in the fabric of my life.  I'm really doing ok- this waiting thing has been coming at me from many angles lately and I wanted to explore my thoughts.  I hope you can find some good in this exploration!  smooches.

End of Winter contest - When will Lola be free?

Oh honey, spring is on the way!

So I've been doing this goofy thing on Instagram, really by accident, showing a pic of a Lola a day since January 1.  I have done this almost every day, although I may have skipped a weekend day, and that is ok.  I am not obsessive about it, as I don't take the pic from the exact same angle.  I'd like to have done that in theory, but you guys, I just can't.  I have a friend from Madison who is taking a pic on the shore of one of the lakes down there, and it is beautiful and I loved how she was doing it.  So after some thought, Lola was sort of the obvious choice, she is right there!  I am not really doing it to record how the light changes at 7:00am every morning as I zip out the door, but just for the heck of it.  Little did I know I was chronically cataloging how poor Lola has been getting buried!

So as I was leisurely enjoying my coffee this morning, I noticed a piece on Channel 9 about a car dealership in Eau Claire who plunked a car on top of a pile of snow and are having a contest..... So yeah, here it is.  A contest about Lola.  (Also a tip of the hat to Lynn L. who had a competition when her old car would spin over to 200,000 miles.  I realize a small piece of it is that too).

I've had a lot of people ask me about Lola lately.  Besides Instagram, I  have had a pic of Lola on the Channel 9 weather as well - buried of course- and there is a lot of interest about how she was made.  And of course have we ever had this much snow before.

I am sure we used to get this much, but the thing is, between Lola, my digital cameras and the deck that has been put in since those times, I haven't had things to measure the snowfall against.  AND I had little kids and who the heck knew what was going on outside. It all boiled down to - is there school today or not??

Anyway, back to business (this was going to be a short post??) So what's your guess people??  WHEN will I be able to see the bottom of Lola's skirt clear of snow ALL around it?  I will NOT touch that snow, trust me.  I never do.  AND while you are at it, when do you think my first planted daffodil will bloom?  I won't be brushing the snow aside there either.....  really I won't!  It doesn't help anyway, they bloom when they want, I've tried that in the past, too.

What will the winner(s) get??  Uh, I'm not sure.  Cookies?  or I think I have a concrete flower pot that I could mosaic up into something purty, too.  THAT would be fitting if it doesn't cost 100 bucks to ship it!  :)  Pretty sure it weighs less than 40 lbs, so I can UPS it for sure.  My choice.

Leave a message either in the message portion here and because blogger can be twitchy, you can also leave me a message on the facebook post about this "contest" or even text/message me.  This was totally a spontaneous, early morning decision so I may be encountering issues I have no idea are coming.....  Oh well....  **Joy stealers need not apply!

So LOLA- when are you going to be free??  I'd like to say March 15 but we all know that isn't going to happen.  :)

March!  March is THIS WEEKEND!!!  AND during March I get to see all my kiddos again- and ELLA and the grand doggies.  YAY

March is bound to have a whole PILE of snow joy!!!

More snowy pix

Cue the birds-

And morning has broken and Lola did not become totally covered by the snow....  this children, is a good thing.

This is actually an afternoon pic, but who's to know??

Meanwhile, the Mad-Art Teacher is attempting to get out to her horse and has to shovel Mt Everest out of the way to get to the path that she can again teeter around on and fall up to her knees at least 2 times before she gets to the barn.  By the way, you forgot to remind me to take the shovel out this morning and it was quite the trek to get there.  But you know me I am tenacious!

Shoveled and target is in sight.
The reason for Mount Everest is of course our truly wonderful snowplow crew who came AGAIN this morning to break through the drifts that formed.  These people are worth their weight in gold this year.  We have a spectacular township when it comes to snow plowing (says the woman whose house is at the beginning of the snowplow route! :) ) Actually though, they do a fantastic job and show up before I am even up in the morning during the week.  Hard working peeps!

Since I have been sitting around for the past 3 days, voiceless, I decided that enough was enough and I had to go for a walk.  A snowshoe session was in order to shake loose the cobwebs and rev up the day.
A lovely day with scattered clouds and sunshine
So with scavenged camera in hand (and obsessively checked for everytime I tucked it away in my pocket), I went off on the "trail" that used to be clearly marked.  It was pretty easy to follow once I got into the woods, but it was not easy walking.  It snowed a lot, in case you didn't get the memo!  :)

this is one of those things that looks really cool in person and doesn't quite translate in photo form
So once I got to the edge of the woods, I found the path was actually being used! The deer have their own version of I-90 through the forest. Crazy deer.

Entrance to the woods road
So even though it looks like the dead of winter, I have seen some signs of spring- or felt them.  I heard the chickadees making some of their spring calls.  They do change their vocalizations as spring gets closer.  Plus I saw the flocks of ravens flying around....  (no pix of that)
I'm sort of obsessed with the shadows on the snow on the trail
And though it looks like it is -20, the wind felt relatively warm.  I said relatively, this wasn't tropical and I'm grasping at things for the effect of optimism.  Certainly we can all work together to perpetuate this fantasy, right??
Curves in the path is quite enticing- I always want to go around that next turn.
I headed toward the cabin, stopping to take photos occasionally, listening only to my own thoughts and the wind and the birds and the occasional snowmobile on the nearby Tuscobia Trail.

This was just beautiful framed by the trees and grasses
This is where the deer decided to stop using the former sled and snowshoe path as a thoroughfare and off I ventured.
LOVE these shadows
The shadows are just amazing at this time of the year under these conditions. I know I have had similar pictures, but they still spark my interest.  I can't not take these shots.

Webs of snow

The cabin shrouded in snow,  no recent tracks or signs of life yet!
So I made it to the cabin and as I attempted to go one step beyond the trail, down to my knees I sunk in snowshoes.  This was a sign- to turn around!  I obeyed the signs this time!   So off I trudged back home to feed the horse and shovel out in front of the horse barn door.  Not to mention the second Mount Everest that was now piled up in front of the snowpath to the house.
This spot is my favorite snow photography location.

Kinda cool how you can see the snowshoe tracks and the poles marks!!

It was one of those "If you can't beat them, join them" sort of days.  It snowed, so go snowshoeing.  Or skiing or maybe snowmobiling, but I like the quieter sorts of sports.

And as the forecast calls for some wicked cold coming our way, we are going to have to dig deep to find ways to stay upbeat and joyful as we face some more temps that are well below normal- again- still- yet.

But we Northern Wisconsin types are a persistent lot and we will find our joy!!  Because, you guys, spring IS on it's way!!

And as Lola slowly disappears into the snow drift...

We did get smacked with a bit of the white stuff last night.  And today!  Wow, I am impressed.  We have some crazy big snow piles and drifts.  I miss the kids being here - the would have been out there building forts and and tunneling into the snow plow piles and making little trails.  We haven't had continuous big snow cover like this in many many years.

I had to snow shoe out to Jacpot this morning, as the trail has not only filled in, there is now a gigantic snow pile right by the corner of the driveway to  traverse over now.  Up until this point our awesome snow plow dude has left a little opening for me to walk through, but he ran out of room to move snow. I tell you, I am so tired of picking my way across the path to the barn and suddenly plunge down to  above my knees if I veer off by an inch or two.

I thought for sure we would have to go into school this morning, but fortunately found out before I actually DROVE IN that indeed the inservice had been cancelled.  That really is a good thing, as so many of our staff members live a long way away from here.  Even Glidden is quite  hike in 30 mph winds and blowing snow and nasty roads, not to mention Minocqua and Highbridge and Mercer and Phillips!  Since I had no actual voice yesterday it was good for me to rest it.  I didn't speak basically at all all day long, other than to myself and the cats and the horse, and when the MA got home I lost it in about 10 minutes.  sigh.  Glad I have a few more days to rest it.

Anyway, back to winter.  Even if it I am tired of the snow cover and I am sick of the super cold weather, it really isn't bumming me out.  I keep saying- it is ONLY February and I really believe it.  I still think it is beautiful and I wish that I could get out and walk in the cold winter air more- but the snow or the wind or the temperature is not being cooperative.  So I am going to trudge out on snowshoes tomorrow and see how far I can go.  I'll have to stick to the woods trail, I think the former path around the field is a lost cause.

So I did all sorts of things today.  I played around doing some fun little things that are a secret right now, plus a little laundry, a little cleaning, did some sorting upstairs, did a touch of cooking and a bit of photo taking. One thing that kept me amused is taking pix of my Lola every couple hours. I took a pic this morning early with the phone and then noticed that she was getting more and more buried, so I kept occasionally taking a shot.  Poor Lola is up to her elbows now.  I played around with a collage site online and put one together just for kicks and giggles.

So it appears that we don't have any more big snows in the future, just some nasty cold weather.  After those few warmish days that found our temps above freezing for the first time since November it is sort of upsetting to know that the below zero song is being replayed.
