And now for a moment of cute from the Mad Art Teacher

I will say in regards to the school year starting- there has been a lot of funny and cute things said to and around me.  The High School kids are just hilarious, they are all still relaxed and not overly stressed out and so all is well.  I have also gotten a ton of compliments on my wardrobe already, which is always a hoot.  Coming from those lovely girls....  I'll take it
And I see a clean art room yet!

Anyway, in the elementary art classroom things are always lively, shall we say, and seriously I have to dash to my desk to grab a pen next time some kid says something hilarious, as those moments do not last long in my memory before they are pushed out by other thing more urgent.

fingerprinting with the kindergarten!  I have no fear!  :)

I do have emblazoned in my mind a very recent discussion with a very sweet and hilarious little guy who told me that I was in his comic book....  yessiree folks, I have super powers!  Of course we always knew that, but now I even have better ones and it is apparently in "print"!  :)  When asked why I was in his comic book, I was informed that of course I was because I was one of his favorite teachers and all his favorite people are in his comic book. (I swear all of this is true)

Also, I can control the blind people of the world  (I promise to use my powers for good) (this is not as bad as it kind of sounds- he means no harm)  AND even better!!!  I CAN FLY AND WALK THROUGH WALLS!!! I hope to begin using my new found abilities forthwith.  This child and I have big plans!! Lol.

I can not tell you how many smiles this has given me in the last day or so.  I am honored!  This does not happen every day.

Meanwhile, I am sleepy and my bed is calling....  sleep well everyone!

First day!!

The first day of school- the Mad Art Teacher returns.

HEY!  I have an honest to goodness Advanced art class that meets separately from all the rest of my classes!  Life is good!

Lots of ideas are swirling around. I have thought of a perfect project that involves technology and photography. Have to consult with others first to figure out the details. More to follow!!  And have a field trip tentatively planned. Busy busy busy....

Meanwhile we had a good morning in the high school. And a noisy but fun afternoon in the elementary.

All great avenues to joy........

Weeks ahead of the game!

I am FINISHED with the Elementary art room!  I have it all cleaned up- in the put away sense.  Not in the you could eat off the tables and/or floor sense.  AND the HS art room is also way way cleaner than it usually is at this time.  So I should be able to finish my grading by working on it tonight and tomorrow for a while, and then finish sorting and organizing on Monday.....

I'd like to THANK my wonderful students at the HS for helping me get through all of that stuff and a big special thanks to Blake, Olivia and Rachel who either did or is planning to help me out over and above class time.  I couldn't have gotten this far without any of them.

Rachel and Olivia  and I - with some AWEsome new "art shirts" from the elem.

An almost all around the room panorama of the elem art room.  I'm so thrilled with this- it could be cleaned tomorrow!

Now THIS, ladies and gentlemen, gives the MAD ART TEACHER joy!

Little kid art

We have been busy, busy, busy at the Elementary school, and I have found a few minutes to put up art from all the grade levels in the hall.  I wanted to share some of the projects we have done so far.  Not all of them, but a good representation.

First up:
4th grade collects insects for science and we do a line lesson making up Imaginary insects.

Lol, one kid named his insect Dave

Next up are 1st and second grades:

Here are some line designs using their names, from second graders (markers, and yarn). This helps me establish their names in my mind!
Below are Monet-style flowers and vases by the first graders.

5th grade started the year with line designs called Zentangles.  These are all displayed together on black tag board.

Back to first grade and leaf printing with glowing fluorescent paint and chalk

 Kindergarten is up next:

These are their clowns that are made with primary colors and shapes......  I fondly call these "Clowns on Crack"  I love these faces.  Lol!!!!

 More 2nd grade work

I know that the 3rd grade is missing, but will update soon.  We have some awesome paintings that are in the drying rack as I speak.  They will be up soon!!

Until next time, enjoy these wonderful examples of student art!!

Miscellany- last days of school

I absolutely feel remiss in posting things about school, after all I am the mad-artteacher!

So, I am sure, positively sure, that everyone is wondering what in the world I do to keep the kids occupied that last week of school!  Is that something that keeps you up at night?  How is she ever going to do it- keep the students busy and indeed learning, while having fun the last 2 weeks of school??  Well, I had an epiphany a month ago, when I was reading an art teacher chat board.  (This is a chat board that is not nearly as much fun as you think.  But it is full of really good information for and by art teachers.)  One person was offering suggestions for an end of school project- hence Turtle Races were discovered and indeed carried out!  Of course this was in the elementary school, the high school has it's own set of issues!  :)

2 weeks before the last day of art, I told the kids about the turtle races.  I only told them that they were going to race tagboard turtles, did not tell them how- at all.  They love mystery.  They guessed and guessed, but I was brutal and would tell them nothing!  So, they took some turtle patterns, traced them on tag and then cut them out and decorated.  A secondary bit of excitement was that I was going to have a mystery guest judge choose the most creative out of each class!  Prizes were promised!  More frenzied guessing ensued..... I was like a piece of ice- did not melt under the pressure.

The last art period was race day, and I tied two big pieces of yarn, very thick yarn, to the table legs, which you can see in the pictures.  I punched a hole in the neck of the turtle, so it wouldn't tear and they threaded it onto the yarn.  Then they jiggled, wiggled, pulled and jerked the string to move the turtle down.  First one to hit the table leg wins!  No touching after you let it go/push it off!  And no enlarging the holes!!!  So I paired them up, we kept track of who won, everyone got at least one Laffy Taffy, and noisy, hilarity was the theme for the day.  The lovely turtles were carefully and studiously decorated, some realistic, some abstract, some funky!  It was great.  They were all winners!
Get ready, get set!
Stay behind the line on the floor!

wiggle wiggle

Jiggle, jiggle
And the winner is....
So I have always planned to post some High School art work, but I didn't really get to it!  But I had some things on the last Tuesday in the room, so I snagged a few photos.

The first thing looks a little, um, frightening, but I assure you it is more funny than anything else!  It was created by Tim, one of our foreign exchange students.  Time put a lot of time and energy into his zombie, even bought some clothes at the thrift shop that we put on the crazy thing.  It is constructed of 90% recycled cardboard!  For obvious reasons, Tim was not able to take this thing home with him, so I have the "pleasure" of watching over it.
zombie!!
I got a few photos of clay items from the last kiln firing of the year.  The top one was very cleverly glazed- she put tape on the bisque ware, glazed it, and then took the tape off and dabbed a bit of underglaze in the raw areas.  Very cool!

Here are a few more clay pieces that turned out pretty well:

Here are 3 paintings all by the same student.  I want to say that she never thought that she was a good painter a year or so ago.  I think she is safely a "good painter" now!
Marilyn
The following painting is very complex- 3 canvases assembled and the oval at the bottom has a mirror in it.  It is reminiscent of tessellation...
Africa

Tiger in Blue

So here is my little sampling of artwork, I hope you enjoyed it.  I feel better now knowing that I have taken care of my art room obligations...  :)  Now I need to finish putting all that art stuff away!!  Ugh!

Until next time, be a joy giver!  We will rule the world someday!!
