Mother's Day weekend with COMPANY!!

Rawr!!

Gramma's morning selfie with Ella

I was absolutely DELIGHTED to find out that the oldest Mad-son and his lovely Sarah and of course that bundle of energy and joy, miss Ella, were coming for Mother's Day this year.  Mother's Day tends to be sort of a sad day for me lately.  Not that I can't get the MA to take me to breakfast or anything, but first of all my mom- as I have discussed is slowly slipping away from us, and second, it is just nice to have all your kiddos around.  At least the elusive Mike is here every year!  :)

Mad-oldest son, Jon, and I
So having another Oswald kid around is pretty awesome, not to mention the other parts of his family, including Mr. Mannington the dog!  We had an enjoyable weekend, and were treated to nice sunny weather.  It wasn't super warm, but at least it was not cloudy.

Uncle Mike giving either Ella or his mom the side eye for continued goofiness.  Jon knows to never break his photo smile!

I had the best time with little miss.  She was a hoot and a delight and as her mom said, Gramma had a shadow this weekend.  I held her every chance I got, and we played and smooched and hugged and she made a game of taking my glasses off and on and then I tickled and kissed her belly.  sigh.  It was so much fun.

Oh my heart is stolen
That is one big ole pancake!

I informed everyone that really the only thing I wanted for Mother's Day is breakfast out.  I did NOT want to make pancakes!!  And so we went!

Ella and Papa- you've notice by now that the tongue is a thing right now....

And finding more sticks.... and pinecones.

There could have been a little silliness going on at times

Ella gives my giant hand a gimme 5!

Always so sad to say goodbye.  But we will see her soon!

We certainly wish Greg and Sarah Jane and little Greggy could have been here, but their turn is coming up here very soon!

It was such a fast weekend, but it was one to hold in my heart and treasure.  So nice to spend time with Jon and Sarah- even if we FaceTime every week, it is still the best to be face to face.  And of course having a Mikey sighting is pretty spectacular as well.

It was such a joyful weekend!

Father's Day 2014

Happy Father's Day to everyone!

We have another father  that has joined the ranks in my family so I have decided to do a multi generational posting!  All sorts of dads and granddads  are involved here!!  Many of these pictures are photos of pictures, so forgive the gnarly shots!

My own dad pretty much looked like this most nights when he came home for supper.  He may look cranky, but I think mostly he was tired.  Being a farmer was not an easy thing.  He worked for another farmer, but owned some of the equipment and was the mechanic and ran the major equipment.  His ability to plant straight rows was somewhat amazing and he spent a lot of time involved in the process of growing plants- most specifically corn.  And his days were long and dirty.

When he was home, he was making sure the farm was in good repair, the garden weeded, the lawn mowed and we were volunteered for a lot of it. Either by actually doing the weeding and mowing or by being a helper.  It wasn't until evening when he would sit down and relax.  Sundays we would often go visit relatives for the day, so he wasn't working every minute... and then there was summers at Grandma and Grandpas place-

My Grandpa Kutz died when I was very young, but my Grandpa Oberley was an important part of our lives. We went up to visit Grandma and Grandpa for at least a week every summer- they lived in northern Minnesota- Walker to be exact.  They lived across the street from a lake and we loved it there. He was such a fun Grandpa, he'd take us fishing, for rootbeer, we'd go camping (even if we didn't want to) and we always had a good time.  We'd get to ride in his truck sometimes and we later on slept in their little camper.  They also came and stayed with us when we were older when Grandpa would drive one of the grain trucks for the farmer dad worked with.  He was a kind and funny man who was a mechanical whiz.  Dad and he got along famously and dad actually relaxed at Grandma and Grandpas.

My boys spent a lot of time with their dad growing up.  I got my respite from being a stay at home mom (until Mike was in 5th grade) by Fred taking the kids on the weekends and actually at times during the weeknights.  Except during tax season, of course, then, no one spent time with Fred.  Lol

Their tradition was on Saturday morning to load up the truck and stop at the transfer station (the dump) and then head on over to see Grandma Oswald.  And Grandpa when he was alive of course.  That tradition continues yet today, and before the boys had kids of their own, they would occasionally go along on the same trip on Saturdays when they were visiting.

You'll notice that his wardrobe hasn't changed a whole lot since the 80's, except that ubiquitous mustache has come and gone!

Load em up and move em out!

As Fathers go, Fred was/is a good one.  He was patient, much of the time, and tried to let them learn by doing and by observation.  They spent a lot of quality time with piles of wood, and learning how to build things from the various projects, always done by hand.  He didn't spend a lot of time with them as super little ones, he called that the houseplant stage!  But they all did a lot of things together. I did too, but it was nice to have time to myself.

My boys were fortunate enough to have 2 grandpas for a while and a great grandpa to get to know!

Unfortunately, Mike was little when Grandpa Oswald and Great Grandpa Oberley died and when my dad was most active so there aren't as many pix of him with them.

Finally, the boys are turning into dads themselves!  The process continues and the story changes.  It is fun to see them with their children and how exciting it is and noticing what their strengths and challenges are.

This is the only pic I could find of Fred holding Greggy- I have to get more!
Everybody's story is a little different and it is good to talk about them.  Sometimes things come up that no one has thought of in a while, and pictures are frequently good catalysts for memories.  This is the way our story reads in 2014 and it is a joyful one indeed.

Mother's Day 2014

Ah, Mother's Day again adjusts it meaning in my house.  In a new role besides a daughter-in-law, I also have a new mom in my family.  Another Grandchild has entered the clan and it is amazing and awesome.

I wanted to call my  mom and talk to her about this new baby boy.  She was such a strong supporter for me when I had my kids. She came up for at least 4 or 5 days each time a baby was born.  For the first one, it was nice to have a knowledgeable person in the house with me (no internet, kids!!) and then for the next two it was someone else to be able to hang out with the siblings.  Back then - and this was only about 30 years ago, there wasn't quite the culture of the dad  being involved in every aspect of the process.  And especially up here in the middle of the northwoods.  The MA was also deeply involved in building up his new business, and he worked then, as he does now- a lot.  So I do not hold any fault- the Grammas were the go to supply of babysitters, internet websites and emotional supporters.

But as most of you know, my mom can't really hold up much of a conversation that would involve discussing the past, or deep, emotional sharing that a new grandson and his new mom and dad  would warrant.  There would be so many comparisons that would need to be made,  and extrapolations that should be worked on, as my son was an active child to say the least and he was SO different from his older brother. And of course, as children are, his younger brother was SO different from them.  Anyway, it is better not to bring on the sadness about things that can't be and see her next weekend when I am in that area.  She does better when you see her.

Anyway, here are a few TBT type pix that I needed to post today.  Because new babies in the house make one more than a little sentimental and just because I am the mom and I can!

Hey, do you know how hard it is to find pictures of me with the kids???  I was always running the camera......  sigh

I miss

I miss-

Ella- I have to hold her soon or I will go bonkers

Jon and Sarah and Greg and Sarah- :(  I will see them soon I think.  Greg and Sarah will be heading up in a few weeks, and if Jon and Sarah can't get up here, I will be going south at some point in March/April.

Mike-  How can the elusive Mike live 2 miles away from me and I haven't seen his face in weeks either??

MY SISTER!!!!  ARGH  We must plan a sister weekend- I'm thinking that whole downtown Minneapolis scene might be VERY cool.  But I'd be happy with a cheap motel in a small town at this point.

Any sort of warmth in the out of doors........  and my flipflops which are sulking in a corner.......

Teaching only in one school building.  I have so many kiddos every day.  I remember when I used to teach just grade school art, and then for a while, just HS art.  I could commit so much time to prepping for different things and creating new projects and having that enthusiasm every single day.  I am on auto pilot most of the time, and barely keeping ahead of the game.  February is the toughest month in Education, guys.  Trust me on this one.

My optimism.  I want to stay in bed.  I want to run away.  I want to eat chocolate and cupcakes until I can eat no more.  I understand that there are people in this world that have it bad- and I am pretty lucky and undoubtedly spoiled in some way or another.....  however this does not make me feel all that much better.  Because it is February and it is a LONG way before we get our spring break- like not until April.  And every one is getting sick and/or testy and/or tired.

So, I will take myself off of this couch and get myself going today and do the best I can, but I am hoping to solve some of these missing issues.  soon.  please.

and THAT will give me some joy

Great weekend!

Memorial Day Weekend, 2013

Usually I have some sort of story in my head when I begin a blog post, but today I have none.  Yet, I am going to press on and at least post a quick weekend wrap up.....  After all, it was Ella's first trip to Grandma's house!

It was a wonderful weekend with the kids- I think we had a great few days overall.  The weather was decent- not too warm, not too cold and no rain!  SHOCKER.  Too bad that no rain trend is not going to continue during this week.  We all enjoyed our visit with little Ella and we had a few guests who came over to meet the little one, so it was an active few days.  Grandma Debi and Grandpa Fred held Ella a LOT, which was wonderful for everyone involved.  Grandma Debi had her enough that she was treated to several of Ella's first smiles!  Never was able to catch those still fleeting moments on "film", but that is just a matter of time.

We got a few little chores done around the house, got part of the garden planted, the clock got fixed and  a couple other things tidied up.  I was fortunate to get 2 delightful Mother's Day gifts- one was a really cool photo mug of Ella and the other the long awaited garden gate- Greg did some blacksmithing and created a beautiful garden gate that he installed on the garden fence this weekend.  So cool!

Mother's Day cup!  :)
We managed to get in a fire in the fire ring on Sunday night (complete with S'mores), a little trap shooting one afternoon and while Jon, Sarah and Ella visited some friends for a few hours, the rest of us went for a hiking/fishing excursion to Patterson Lake near here.  So, it was a nice, mostly relaxing, long weekend of family time.  AND one of the best things is the family pic we got- thanks to Bob the Barber, who was willing to run the camera for me.

Not sure where the tennis ball is, but that is what she is looking at!

And so Greg just went on in....

Carrots brought them all running in!

It was really very sad when they all left- but fortunately it will only be a few weeks before I see them all again.  But, I was really tired!  I did some weeding as long as there was no mosquitos buzzing in my ear, so that felt great.  If it is not raining, weeding will be on the agenda for the evening tonight as well.
Manny was determined not to be left behind

See you soon, baby girl!

So, I hope you had a lovely Holiday weekend, as these are the best days of the summer!  And summer is so short and we have to pickup all the joy that we can!
