And away we will soon go!

Wow you guys! This is amazing. I'm sitting - hopefully out of the way- on the previously mentioned screen porch drinking a little coffee and supervising Lucky the dog, hoping he doesn't start barking. The little darling. Lol.  So the adventure is about to begin- the real party is about to start. I can hardly believe this!!

It doesn't seem like that long ago that I installed my count down app (and I have a mini trip later in the summer counting down too) let alone signed up to go in the first place. Instead of 400 some days- I have 4 hours.

I feel so fortunate to be here only 30 minutes from the airport. I actually slept a decent amount and feel pretty good! I keep forgetting that this first part only gets me to New York- like that wouldn't be a great place to visit again- and the next leg doesn't begin until late afternoon.

I have plenty of things with me and room in my luggage to bring some things back- so this should all be good. I know that I have some people following my flight number, which is a cool thing too. Good weather is forecast for everywhere today! And all the rain that was in the forecast over in Italy has pretty much dissipated other than one day- Monday!  It was hard to pack for a warm place when it has been a cool June here so far.

Anyway, I'm not going to go on and on as I want to preserve battery on the phone and I'm not knowing what else to mention.  I am not sure if I'll have wifi regularly or not, so whether a post gets written again before 6/28 I just can't say! Thanks to all the people who have listened to me yak about this trip. All of you all who have read this and can't wait for pictures (lol- oh the pressure), my hubs and family who have watched me slowly wind myself up into a frenzy, my good friends in town who hopefully didn't roll their collective eyes at me, my sister who hasn't put me in a choke hold quite yet, and my amazing friends who text me daily and keep me grounded. I'm so lucky to have you. So so lucky.

So until I write again in a few or more days- Buongiorno and arrivederci!!
And have a joyful June. Xo

Let's spend the final wait with the Seester!!

I really don't think I could think of a better way to spend this day!! Rose and I will use the better part of the morning doing some shopping and then we are getting pampered for a little while and finally spend the evening editing our packing list

Sounds like a good plan, right?

I thought so too.

I don't have a lot to say at this moment. I spent an hour waking up on this lovely screen porch and now we are about to commence with some errands!

I'm feeling good but nervous/twitchy and seriously ready to get going. Again. One more sleep and then we will be off!

I can hardly believe it!!

I may write more later. :)

Have a joyful day!

Lets get this party started! 2 days!

I am not feeling very wordy this morning- as I am really overwhelmed with the things I need to do today.  Fortunately the list really isn't super long, as my new method of doing all things on said list as soon as possible after adding them to the list has worked wonders.  Don't ANY of you (yeah I am talking to you!) think that this is a permanent change or anything- that sort of thing probably won't stick with me.  Because disorganized chaos is part of my charm.  hehehe

Disorganized,  charming chaos- I am a dish of flowers!
Anyway, (forgive my Captain Obvious moments here) I can not believe I am down to the number 2 on my countdown app and amazingly enough that will change to a 1 here in about 4 hours!  The range of emotions I have felt- just in the last 10 minutes even- has been astounding.  So when I find myself way, way out there, I bring myself back to the present and attempt to let sanity rule.  Having a lot of battles between the logical and emotional side right now.

It is time for me to finish up my packing- at least as far as I can here- and straighten up the house a little.  That will serve to make sure I have not forgotten anything. I am having moments of "do I have enough money" which is always something my brain goes to right away.  I am hoping for enough appropriate clothing, that I will be able to find the right pair of walking sandals today, that I will not hit bad weather (I don't think I will), that I will sleep at least a few moments on that plane....

And this is the time that I am going to let it all go and just go with it.  I will make sure I have all my belongings with me and beyond the packing and all, I just need to relax into it.  What happens, happens.  If I sleep I do and if I don't, I have a book to read.  I will enjoy my trip.

So many people have offered so much advice and I really do appreciate it!  You are all so awesome.  I will be using my camera every day, but don't you all worry- it will not be up to my face every moment.  I will be absorbing all the things that will be happening and that I will be seeing, because that is how I roll.  I am such an in the moment person, for better or for worse.  If I am in charge of a situation I will always be thinking of the next thing, but in this case- I am not in charge.

I am looking forward to being in a country that does not have English as it's primary language.  To seeing things that are so much older than anything we have here- things that I learned about in Art History class that seemed so far away and unreachable.  I am looking forward to having such new experiences and ready to embrace the change that will come to my way of viewing things.  Every time I have an adventure that gives me such anticipation, I find that I look  at things in a different way.  That way isn't easy to describe or pinpoint, but it is a new way to experience life and finding some joy in it.  This trip for me is to continue living a larger life.  I began this quest for "more" with my Boundary Waters trip a few years ago, I dabbled in it  a bit when I went on my children's band and choir trips with them.... I definitely immersed myself during my Denver trip last year.  I am stretching my boundaries and seeing where the outskirts lie.  Living a bigger life has given me such joy, and it was beginning when I started this blog even.  Pushing at my boundaries, taking on a personal stance of bravery and doing things  that make me afraid- even if it is clinging to a tree in unusual places, in a location that is way too close to the edge of something.  I don't want to fall over, but inside me,  I want to get as close as I can.  And I am creeping ever closer- my comfort zone has ventured out a bit. I am READY!

So as I spend the morning in a whirlwind of activity, packing up my car, fussing over little things that I really should just leave alone, I will be trying to not imagine what will happen Friday.   I want to be surprised.  Lol.  I am actually so excited about seeing a different airport!  DON'T JUDGE ME!!!  HAHAHA  Actually- go ahead.  I really am not worried.  I am anxious to see what one of those big airplanes look like- want to see the clouds from the airplane again.  Try to sleep in an upright position! Land in a new place unlike one I have been in.  My wish is that every time I do these new things, my excitement and anticipation for them does not fade.  The waiting has been exquisite torture, and I love it!

I will most likely post another tomorrow from Minneapolis, but not sure about Friday!!  We shall see what happens.  Maybe I will do a selfie from the car on the way to the airport at 6 am.  Lol  You just never know.

Until tomorrow, have a super joyful and maybe just a little bit of an adventurous day.

3 days and tomorrow

Tomorrow I begin my journey by heading to my Seester-Rose's house!  My plan is to leave in the afternoon (early-ish) to get to the Radio Drive area of Woodbury, shop for a few last things during the rush hour, and then zip around the south side of the cities to her place after about 6.  That should work pretty well to accomplish what I need and not feel rushed to get out of the house in the morning!  I will be gone long enough, I thought I would hang out for one more lunch with the MA and get that last minute laundry and such done.

This marble sculpture is called the Laocoön- it is from ancient Greek times and is housed in the Vatican museum.   It was found in the early 1500's and was highly influential on the artists of the Renaissance. Imagine this being dug up by a farmer in a vineyard.  More can be read about this here  Just when I said I was not going to do any more reading!  HA
This cloudy weather of late is definitely a bummer.  I know its all good we are not in a drought and all, but I just heard that we have gotten 8-12 inches of rain in the last month..... not surprised by those numbers.  I really need to get a walk in today- I had a time falling asleep last night.  My brain is doing that thing where it just is firing off random pictures/songs/thoughts at high speed when I lay down..... obviously I did not get enough exhausting exercise in.

Last night I got caught up reading about long airplane flights, and have decided not to read about anything like that any more.  I really do not need to know.  I can just do it.  Same thing with reading about the art of Italy- I am done reading.  I have read quite a bit, I have my tour book if I need to read more about places in general, but I am ready to experience it all.  I have been in a state of anticipation for a year and a half and now I am ready to go!  All I have to do now is shove stuff into a suitcase and go!

I have plenty to keep me busy today, though. I'll make a cake for the MA, since well- cake- and tomorrow morning finish the laundry for myself, mostly.  I will go wish my friend Luann Happy Birthday, I will go for the afore mentioned walk....  I will lay out all my clothes for real, this time, and assemble a list of sorts that I might need to finish by the end of the day.  Though I will make that effort to do those things as I think of them.

Anyway, what I want to do is spend the day doing things that I want to do and relaxing, just a little bit.  I am trying not to rush away my days here before I leave, but it is so hard when the adventure is about to begin!  Have an incredibly joyful day!

F.O.U.R. D.A.Y.S.

My goodness, I am on the home stretch here!  Yesterday was a day of gardening and doing some things around the house and such.  Not a lot of excitement, but that is ok too.  Today I should get the last of my Amazon order and I will see what MORE I want to do around the house.
A little peace and tranquility in green- my hosts, gentian, lilies and a peek of a dark perennial geranium

I began gathering the bags and suitcases I plan to use to get to my dear Seester's house- and there, apparently, I will find a selection of luggage sizes that will appropriately fit my packing needs.  Mostly I need to leave room for additions to my luggage while over there.  I am thinking a hoodie or t-shirt might be coming home with me! Certainly we plan to ship some of the local consumable items home as a group.  And yes, we mean wine! Plus some olive oil/olives as well.

I am getting to the point, now, that I feel like I am somewhat prepped for this trip.  Both in terms of having all this stuff together and also in the being aware of some of the things that I am going to see.  I did a little looking and one of the things that is a must see during a walking tour of Rome is the Trevi Fountain.   AND I discovered that there are several "live cams" there.  I am a fan of the Bayfield Inn Live cam, I can be transported there and watch the ferry travel across and just feel generally at home, envious,  weepy, PIE!!,  relaxed when I tune in.

I am amazed when I look at the above number of 4!  I remember sharing with a few people the fact that I had loaded up a countdown app on my phone- maybe in January?- when there was about 140 days to the trip.  Heck I remember knowing that the tour was approximately 548 days away!  And it was decided that time would fly and then suddenly it would be only  a few days away and I would be freaking out.  Lol, oh some people are always right.

I really think that I have enjoyed the anticipation of this trip as much and fully as possible.  Doing a little art research has made this particularly rich, and I feel pretty peaceful now.  I am just waiting for the mailman and my Amazon order!

I hope you are on your way to a spectacular week, everyone!  One that should be filled with some summer time joy!  It is my wish for you today.

A Mind Full of random- 26 days

Yesterday was indeed a lovely day in northern Wisconsin....  I got a walk and a kayak in and then a little gardening.  So, I did indeed sleep a bit last night.  Good news, for those of you who care or are keeping track.

NOT what you would expect to be seeing in the river  :)
I experienced a bit of frustration yesterday when I got home from said kayak and found that many of my photos were blurry.  **insert cursing**  WHY??  Well I'll tell you, I tried using a different setting(TV mode, or shutter preferred) and I didn't have my shutter speed set high enough.  MASSIVE SIGHS.  I keep feeling like I should have this all down pat, but it is all just practice and its all ok.  I had massive anxiety last night over the whole thing, though.  Thank heaven I had my Twitter friend, the Mad-O'sFan, to keep me occupied because I think everyone else was out having a night-life or sleeping or something.  Which is what I should have done- the sleeping part.

So this morning I am thinking I should hop in the kayak and just go for a paddle and calm myself, but I am not sure.  When I get like this I am not sure of anything.  Now I am thinking obsessively about what I need for clothes for this trip and also shoes....  Really I should just be contacting my doctor and asking for sedatives at this point, because none of this is going to get easier.  However, if I walk or kayak by myself it is like meditation, so this is the thing I must do.

It was a gorgeous day out on the river, so nice to sit in the warmth of the day and when one forgets to sunscreen one's legs, you might even end up with a minor sunburn.  I had taken off my t-shirt in favor of my tank top, so I was able to cover my legs with the shirt for the second half of the event.  The river was just lovely, there was a little bit of activity in the animal world, and then there was the boat that ran into a rock or stump that gave us some entertainment.

We were paddling along and were quite a distance, and saw this boat coming down the flowage.  While it was not going fast, someone was not watching for the serious plethora of rocks and stumps that are under the surface of this body of water.  The boat went UP over the rock at a minimum of 45 degrees, then of course started to level out a bit as it went ONTO the stump and tipped way over to one side.  I thought they were going over for sure.  Then they revved their engines with the prop pretty much out of the water so you can imagine how well that worked.  Eventually they pushed them selves off because it appeared he had a random 2x4 in his boat.... why?  We paddled way off to the side as there certainly was nothing we could do in kayaks....  and maybe we wanted to quietly mock them for trying to get into a place where a speed boat sort of had no business going.  But that could be just a rumor.

Otherwise,  it was a busy day full of gardening and animal care and trying to make sure the MA doesn't "use up" his spray paint of any of my stuff.  The man is a nut job sometimes. One time several years ago, he "used up" my cobalt blue enamel paint on the window sills on the back side of the garage.  No one sees this but holy crap that still gives me eye twitches.  I have been getting statements referring to me being gone all summer.... as in- why don't you get me such and such since you will be gone all summer?  Or I guess I won't plant such and such this year since you will be gone all summer.  All in jest of course.  Ha- what that says is I think someone is slightly worried about being by himself for 2 weeks.  And since he has no cell phone, unless I can figure out when to get in a quick FaceTime, communication could be limited.  But I'm working on figuring that one out. Poor baby.  Fortunately he is capable of taking care of himself of course.

A pile of painted turtles, who did  not move when I got within 10 feet of them- not typical
I am seriously cringing over having to back to school tomorrow.  These last couple weeks are brutal.  Fortunately, the hs kids all have projects.  I just have to get thing cleaned up with their help at the end of the week....

Oh the mad rush to clean all those art rooms up.... I think I will return to stressing out what to wear in Italy- that is a lot more fun.

Not sure what the day is going to bring today, but I am hoping for a little joy giving and I hope a little joy receiving.  And perhaps a little conference call with my seester-Rose to discuss life.

Have a lovely, joyful day.

28 days, 4 weeks and lots of excitement

4 weeks from today I will begin the trip of my life time (so far!!).  But before that happens, I have quite the schedule--

  • Today- (YEESSSS) is Friday- and Fridays at this time of the year are made of diamonds and gold.
  • A week from today is when Jon, Sarah, Ella and Ava make their first trip north since last Thanksgiving (DOUBLE YEEESS)  and Memorial Day (long weekend!) and graduation.
  • 2 weeks from today is the last day of school (I can't even) and I will be prepping for my end of the year, day after school is out, trip up to the Big Lake!  (angels singing the Hallelujah chorus)
  • 3 weeks from today I plan to have all my orders finished for next school year- I MUST BE DONE.
  • 4 weeks from today- My amazing brother in law will be toting Rose and I to the Minneapolis airport to join the rest of the people we are going on this tour with and begin our adventure.
My mind is being stressed out to the max right now- first from the building excitement and second from the end of school.  The end of school is SO intense.  I tried to describe it to someone the other day, and you just can't imagine unless you are a teacher.  There is stuff to do this last 3 or 4 weeks - you can't blow it off.  The students are getting restless and the seniors are just trying to hold it together.  They all are excited but most are afraid beyond belief.  As much as the profess to "hate it here" and "this is the worst school ever", they are safe and cared for in high school and they are scared to death at leaving this situation.  The elementary students- well they are sort of like monkeys in a cage.  LOL.  I do love those little dudes, but wow are they noisy right now.  Anyway, it is a constant battle to keep them on task, to get them to clean up (insert silent screams here), to help the floundering students get themselves to a point of passing classes and they are so needy in so many ways.... They need so much care while driving the teacher to the breaking point.  I am actually not being over dramatic at all.  We, as a group of professionals, are needing some time off, you can't imagine how intense it is to monitor the interactions of all those children, listen for tension bubbling under the surface, watch their art works for signs of trouble (in my case) and trying to not be short and angry with the people around you.  And then we have to keep up with lesson plans and grading and thinking about next year..... We are holding our own at this point.

EXCITEMENT though is under it all for me.  I react to things in weird ways, and I sort of had a mini implosion this week when my unrealistic expectations got the best of me.  Fortunately I have the resilience to recognize it and deal with it.  Not to mention some of the best friends ever.  I have been getting some things done that needed some lead time- like arranging for the way I am going to handle my money for the trip.  I located my birth certificate- again- which I apparently need.... I ordered an adaptor for charging.... I may have texted someone at 10:30 last night to say I will miss my electric toothbrush when I am gone....  Lol- total random neuron firings are happening to this girl.

I began this week with an Italy meeting- and we discussed a lot of important things- which really started to hammer home the fact that it is coming soon..... and my count down monitor is down into the 20's- I started at 140 days or something like that!  I only have to flip one screen on the calendar of my phone to observe when this all happens.  I am beginning lists.....  I think my sleep is being affected by this all too.  But I can sleep in July.

Anyway, 4 weeks from today we should be loading up the car on our way to the Minneapolis airport (I love being in the city- so that in itself will be a fun little drive) so we can fly to JFK in New York.  We "get to" hang out in New York for a while, as we have a bit of a lay over before hopping on the plane to Milan....  I can barely imagine it, yet I think about it all the time.

I am trying so hard not to wish my life away...  I remember what a fantastic summer I had last year.  The thing I did was really enjoy every day- I did so many little cool things and SAVORED every day. That is my goal for this summer as well. SAVOR the moments and the days and not just look forward to the next event.  Though that anticipation indeed is part of the joy of the events that will be happening.

Have a wonderful Friday everyone.  Be a joy giver- some one probably needs some. MWAH

So, what are you waiting for?

So what are you waiting for?
Isn't it amazing how many variations of theme this statement could have?

It could be a challenge.  It could a question of object.  It could be a question of who.  It could be a question of action or inaction.  It could be rhetorical or it could be objective.

At this time of the year, MANY of us have a common want that we are waiting for, but there are so many possibilities.  Here are a few that spring to mind

Spring- well duh.  Spring holds so much promise after the bleak hopelessness waiting of winter.  We are waiting for the snow to melt, for the weather to get warmer, for our flipflops to be appropriate footwear choices....  we want to see the green grass- heck any sign of grass, no matter what the color- and buds on the trees.  We want to have flowers, and bugs (oy, do I have to include the mosquitos and deer flies?), and gravel in our driveways and the cacophony of birds' and animals' calls.  Spring is that proverbial time of birth and renewal and growing and spring break-- oh yeah, we all need spring break of some sort.  And we really need Lola to be free of her snow prison!!

People- I personally am waiting to see my people.  My kids, my grandchild, my mom and my siblings who I haven't seen in a long time.  We wait for the mailman, the UPS guy, or the snowplow driver.  We wait for people to get here and we are waiting sometimes for them to just leave.  I have lately thought about people I haven't seen in a while and then they show up in the grocery store! We wait for calls and messages and texts, we are surprised when we get so many and then are sad when we hear from no one and sometimes we are annoyed that people are bothering us and relieved when there is no communication at all.  Finding new people, retaining our best people in life and sometimes others move or slip out of sight- all part of our flow.

Birth- Some of you may know that I am waiting for my next grandchild- and that will be happening fairly soon.  This is the best kind of anticipation, fraught with hope, anxiety, joy, and wondering.  Some of the hardest waiting that needs to be done.  Birth of our babies, our pets, the animals of our world - even the plants and seed we nurture, are surely treasures that need some extra attention.

Death- unfortunately this is a cloud that looms...  our elderly parents and grandparents, our friends and neighbors of all ages, all the living things in our life are in "danger" of following this natural completion of life.  I will say that every morning I look out to see if Jac is still standing and every evening I search to see his head stretching over the paddock gate.  My Jacpot is an old boy and one day in the not too distant future his sweet hay scented breath will be gone.

Perfection- Perfection in life, weight, diet, exercise, money, housing, car, clothing and the list can go on and on, many people are looking for any of these at any given time.  A constant bombardment from outside and from within give us the idea that we are just waiting for a time when perfection will be ours.  Our GOAL WEIGHT is what we need to be at, but wait, maybe we can just lose 5 more and then we will actually be thin enough.  Our DIET is needing to be perfect everyday and if it is not, then we surely will die well before our time, or we will not be as healthy as we should be, or we may not have the energy to do the exercise that we MUST do perfectly.  Every day. I'm pretty sure it is written on our foreheads if this is not done properly and perfectly.   We need to have enough money to have that perfect house, car and clothing to show to the outside world that we can look just like those people on the internet or act just like the people on tv, or be just like the folks down the road who appear to have a marvelous, perfect life, who really don't at all.  If we wait for the lottery to be won, or our proverbial ship to come in, or that goal weight to be achieved or if we can just run a 10 k then we will be of that proper fitness level to live a perfect life, well then, that is just what needs to be done.

Of course, intellectually we all know that there is no perfect.  But those sorts of images and ideas are shoved into our faces daily.  Some people don't pay attention to that at all, and I wish I was one of them, indeed I am trying to be.  Some of us are visual people and there are others who zealously strive to do well in all aspects of our life (ahem, overachiever types pay attention) may have a hard time dealing with all that propaganda.  Those ideas that infiltrate your head when you are not looking, you pay too much attention material things that we may or may not need. Things that seem like really good idea at the time evolve into something that is more than a bit passé or not helpful anymore.  Goals are outdated, and need revising.  Sometimes you have to come up with your own plan, something that works for you and not for the rest of the world. There is no authority in this life that says things are right or wrong in how you choose to spend your time and live your life (no matter what someone on the internet says). Turns out there is NO ONE BEST WAY to do anything.  There is your way though, and that is your best way.

We have to learn to enjoy the wait, because it turns out that waiting is a metaphor for life, as I see it. Raise your hand if you couldn't wait to become old enough to stay up past 8, to get your drivers license, to be old enough to drink, to graduate, to get that job, to be married and have kids (or not).  We are always wishing our life away to the next thing.  That is something we all do, and yet it would be so nice to live more in the moment.  Really enjoy what you are doing now, even if it is not what you are "supposed" to be doing.  This is hard to do and is something I used to do more!  I used to just take a day and do what I wanted, now it seems I fill my time with supposed to dos.  I am supposed to be out walking, though it is stupidly cold out, when they promised me warm.  I should be upstairs finishing cleaning years of collected stuff, but wow does that get old.  I should be reading something, or cooking something or in some way accomplishing something that needs to be done.  Push through, just do it, go for your goals, yadda yadda yadda.  You  might not enjoy everything that you HAVE to do, but you should do things that you like.  Eat things that you like, and screw it if someone says you "shouldn't".  Be the person that you want to be, even if it isn't what someone else wants you to be.  In the end, you have to live with ...... YOU!

MAYBE we need to stop for a minute.  MAYBE we should be looking around and living our life as we have it right now.  Keep ourselves busy while we are waiting for the next thing- appreciating the things we have and the people we love and like, enjoying the body that you have right now, and the things that we can do at this time.  Talking to your favorite people, petting your favorite horse, cats and doggies, drawing the things you like, singing the songs you love, playing the games that make you shine.  And undoubtedly we need to begin enjoying this wait- because it seems that the journey is what it is all about.  You don't have to after all eat perfectly every day, or exercise the most awesome way that is possible, or have a perfect relationship with all the people around you or have the best and most of every material thing.  A very wise person reminded me that I am perfect just the way I am, because I am different and quirky and not perfect.  And so are all of you.  And we should find a whole lot of joy in that!

**I want you to know though this sounds somewhat mysterious or multi-meaning, there is no major tear in the fabric of my life.  I'm really doing ok- this waiting thing has been coming at me from many angles lately and I wanted to explore my thoughts.  I hope you can find some good in this exploration!  smooches.
