Sculptural progress

One of the things I really wanted to do this summer was to get a few concrete sculptures done. I had the giant hand and a crow partly constructed and also bits and pieces of a bench.

Well now, thanks to the cooler weather I am making great progress to that end. I have one more solid evening to go working on the hand and about an hour of wire end clipping to do on the bench and crow, plus a good, hard, looking it over session.

Next week I should be able to get them concreted. That is a huge job, but the weather is looking favorable. In other words, no rain or hot weather is forecast! So make hay while the sun is shining or "pour" cement while the weather is good. Not that I pour anything. It'll be me, some sand, Portland cement, water, a wheel barrow and a hoe. Good times!

Hard work, but certainly I'll find some joy!

  2. I have following the progress of your hand for a while now, and am very interested in it. It almost seems like it could be a spot to recline, or maybe feed birds, or have water in it. I am disconcerted by the the 5-gallon pail. Will its armature be self supporting once it is concreted (and I assume mosaic-ed)?

Or will it simply counter-point Lola, similar to Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel only in sculpture versus paint?

    1. Don't worry! The hand will not have the bucket underneath of it!!! I promise!!

It is actually going to be plain concrete, with something in it. Maybe a bird bath or bowl for flowers, but I was thinking also about a dragon fly or soemthing similar. I'll have to see what pops up!
